The research project of PhD student Matteo Salomone revolves around the figure of Santo Varni (1807-1885), a sculptor and intellectual from Genoa, studied also through the work of numerous students (notably Giulio Monteverde), who, together with the master, largely contributed to making the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno a true international model of funerary sculpture.
